Thermo wood, or thermally modified wood, is a type of lumber that has undergone a specialized heat treatment process to enhance its properties. Through this process, wood is subjected to high temperatures in a controlled environment, altering its cellular structure and improving its stability, durability, and resistance to decay.
Why thermal modification is needed & Process of Making Thermo Wood
Wood cells contain two types of water – bonding water OH and free water h2O. Any changes in the proportion of hydrogen in the wood cells can cause deformation of the wood, making it vulnerable to mold and rot when the moisture content reaches 23%.
Therefore, thermal modification is necessary. The moisture content is significantly reduced to almost 0% with high heat ranging from 185 to 212 degrees, during which the OH is also removed from the wood cell. The OH group absorbs the free water into the wood cells, increasing the wood’s moisture content.
Thermal modification helps to remove the OH groups from the cell and creates the stability of the wood. With steam, the moisture content is increased to 4-7% during the cooling process, which makes the wood a living product. The maximum moisture content of thermally modified wood products is 12% at 100% relative humidity.
